Here’s how much loft insulation you’ll need to ensure your home is warmer this winter

How much insulation is needed within my loft? Both homeowners who are upgrading their loft space and those who just wish to prevent heat loss ask this question frequently, and we have the answers.

You might have been asking yourself this question lately for a variety of reasons; for example you’ve noticed you have limited insulation within the loft,  or your home is feeling colder with the cooler weather creeping in and your heating bills are on the rise. All tell tale signs that it’s time to improve your insulation!

The good news is that upgrading your loft insulation can significantly reduce energy costs and be a rather inexpensive investment for homeowners hoping to make their houses warmer.

We’ve put together some knowledge based on our experience alongside government recommendations which we hope helps get you started.

How much loft insulation do I need?

When looking at how to insulate your house, the methods and materials you should use will mainly depend on the kind of space you are dealing with and how you plan to use the loft space; whether it simply be for storage purposes or if you are planning a loft conversion, there are a multitude of options.

There are of course, recommendations set out in the building regulations that you should bear in mind – we won’t bore you too much with the technical jargon, in short, it’s important that all new builds in England meet a target  U-value of 0.16W/m2K, which can be achieved with several materials.

This can usually be achieved with 270mm of mineral wool or natural insulation applied at floor level, or 170mm PIR board.

Alternatively, another fantastic method of insulation is 100mm roof spray foam, applied to the underside of the pitched roof with a membrane system. This system comes with a 25 year product warranty and lasts the lifetime of the properties structure unlike some of the conventional insulation materials.

If you are upgrading your existing loft insulation, it is not a requirement for you to meet the above depths, however it is the governments current recommendation and certainly makes a lot of sense from an energy-saving point of view!

Here at Sealsixty, our expert installers can assist with both loft mineral wool insulation and spray foam insulation depending on your requirements and we’d be happy to provide some no obligation advice.
